Design Principles
Exercise 2: Balance, Repetition, Emphasis & Movement

LECTURE
Week 2(31/8): Today, Ms Yip Jinchi introduced us some principles of design in the pre-record videos.

Balance
-distribution of visual height in a work of design
-visual equilibrium of the elements that causes the whole image to appear balance
 -can be symmetrical and asymmetrical
Symmetrical balance
-Has equal 'weight' on equal sides(horizontal/vertical), results in radial balance
-Approximate symmetry-equivalent but not identical forms

Asymmetrical balance
-unequal, more visual variety and complex
-one side of the component might contain a dominant element and the other side might contain lesser focal points

The Golden Ratio

Rule of third

Emphasis
-used to create dominance and focus in an artwork
-To achieved dominance , various elements can be used to create emphasis(shapes, colours ,values)

Repetition
-could make an artwork look active
-create rhythm and pattern
Variety(change/slightly difference): essential to keep rhythms exciting and active, to avoid monotony
Pattern: increases visual excitement by enriching surface interest

Movement
-the way a design leads the eye in/around / through a composition=the path the eye follow
-seem to be moving
-comes from the kinds of shapes , forms , lines and curves
Figure 1.6:Movement artwork sources from Pinterest

Hierarchy
-the choreography of content in a composition , directs viewers to the most important information first
Alignment
-the placement of element in a way that edges line up along common rows/columns, or their bodies along a common centre
-creates a sense of unity and cohesion, make the design become aesthetic and perceived stability
-leading a person through a design

INSTRUCTIONS

Exercise: Repetition & Emphasis
Repetition
I decided to draw this pattern when I saw it and the reason I draw it in a circle is because it looks more infinite turning so it brings out the repetition principles.

Figure 2: First attempt Repetition Artwork , 5/9/21
Feedback: Ms Jinchi said that the ideas was good but maybe I can try to draw it an organic shapes and fill in this pattern. She suggest me to draw a water flow shape and add the pattern to it.

Color Study
I tried few colors to see different outcome. Then I choose navy blue as my final outcome.

Final Outcome(Repetition)

This is my final outcome of repetition. I changed the shape to make it feels like flowing , and I kept the shape because it somehow looks like a shell.

Emphasis Artwork 1
Inspiration
Figure 3: Inspiration emphasis artwork sources from Pinterest
I inspired by this artwork and suddenly I think of this umbrella ideas and painting it yellow to make it become focus point. Then, I feel like it's too simple , so I added some different patterns above the umbrella and it looks like raining.

Figure 3.1: First attempt Emphasis Artwork , 6/9/21
Feedback: Ms Jinchi said these two element (umbrella & pattern) is 'fighting' to be the emphasis and it feels like the viewers don't really know which to look at. She suggest that perhaps I can draw the pattern on the umbrella too or I can just draw the simple umbrella and raining drops around the umbrella as well.

Figure 3.2:Second attempt after changes, 12/9/21
So I draw umbrellas the whole artwork and painted it grey and left the middle one as the emphasize. Then, I choose a pattern to draw on it to make it more unique and attractive.

Final Outcome (Emphasis)

This is my final outcome of emphasis . After listened to Ms Jinchi's suggestion , I tried to make a brighter color to the umbrella in the middle. I feel like the result is better because viewers will first caught the brightest one to look at.

Reflection
I have learned a lot in the exercise. I have learned that a good artwork can bring out the meaning and also what principles that is using. When I am drawing the repetition, I think that the final outcome can bring out unity because the whole artwork contain only one pattern. Then , I have learned that emphasis is very important in the artwork. It can immediately caught viewer's attention and they will first see the main subject that you emphasize.
