Design Principles
Exercise 3: Harmony/Unity/Symbols/Word and image
LECTURE
Harmony
-Involves the selection of elements that share a common trait
-is a sense that all of the elements of your design fits together (same theme aesthetic style or mood)
-is a sense that all of the elements of your design fits together (same theme aesthetic style or mood)
Unity
-repetition of particular elements throughout your design(colors , shapes
or materials) to pull the look together
-occurs when these elements are balanced and give a sense of
oneness
Scale and Proportion
-both design elements that have to do with size
Scale:
- the size of one object in relation to the other object in a design
- the size and dimension of figures and forms relative to a specific unit of measure
- can be determined in two ways: Actual measurement / Visual estimate based on comparison
Proportion:
- the size if the parts of an object in relationship to other parts of the same object
- the relationship of two or more elements in a composition
- the effective use of proportion in design often results in harmony and unity
Symbol:
- A sign , shape or object that used to represent something else
- provide or convey information, equivalent to one or more sentences of text or even a whole story
Figure 1.2: Lecture slides: branch of symbols
We are going to focus on pictorial symbols, abstract symbols and arbitrary
symbols.Pictorial symbols: image-related / simplified pictures
Abstract symbols: look like the objects that they represent but have less
details
Arbitrary symbols: no resemblance at all , invented with the meaning
constructed , based on geometric shapes and colors.

Word and Image
Image: a vital part of design , can be in printed or digital , viewers are
able to relate to the concept or the brand if the right image are used.
Suitable typeface and strategic positioning of the type will result in visual
hierarchy and balance in the artwork.
Typography: the design and arrangement of text to convey a message or
concept
INSTRUCTION
Exercise 3 (2 designs in total): Choose TWO principles from Harmony / Unity
/ Symbol / Word and Image. Produce 1 design for each chosen
principle.

Figure 2.5: Second attempt unity artwork , 24/9
So I did some changes based on Ms Jinchi's feedback. The bottom part I remain
the same and I changed the upper part. I draw different shapes and I try to make
the four edges like diagonal , the upper right corner same shape with the bottom
left corner and the upper left corner is same shape with the bottom right
corner.
Figure 2.6 : Second attempt unity artwork (landscape) , 24/9
I tried to make landscape view too. Then I choose to make the four edges
like diagonal too just like the changes I made in the artwork above this.

Figure 3.2: Pollutions
Drawing
I decided to draw a theme that is related to ocean pollution. I draw
it as a circle to show that it is our Earth and I make behind of the
words white color so that it is clear to see. The bottom of the ocean
is full of plastic bottles and also rubbish that made by humans. I
draw those plastics on top to make it looks like jellyfishes is
swimming. Then, I draw sea turtle that its head stuck with the plastic
bag and also a whale that trapped by fish net that been thrown to the
sea.
Figure3.3: Video progression(word and image)
Figure 3.3: First attempt word and image artwork , 19/9
FEEDBACK: Ms Jinchi said the idea was good but I can try to enlarge the
size of sea turtle and also lower down the word 'Ocean Pollution'.
She suggest me to try different typefaces to explore more ideas.
Figure 3.4: Second attempt word and image artwork , 25/9
I did some changes in this artwork too. I enlarge the size of sea turtle and
I change the plastic bags into same color. I also lower down the text.
Figure 3.5: Second attempt word and image with different typeface ,
25/9
I tried to use different typefaces but I feel like the previous one is
better so I think I will choose the previous one.
Figure 3.6: Second attempt word and image with slightly changes ,
27/9
This time , I tried to make the water more gradient. I also change the rubbish
under the sea become white so that it is more obvious.
Figure 3.7: Second attempt word and image with different typeface
,28/9
I tried to make the third typeface before the class starts. I just think of
I can add this sea water brush to the words and I feel like it is so
matching to what I need. But I feel like this typeface is a bit too formal
so I think I might change it.

REFLECTIONS
I have learned a lot in this exercise because I get confused between
harmony and unity sometimes but it is fine when these two principles
occurs in the same artwork. When I am doing the unity artwork, I think
it is interesting although they were not the same shape but it end up
appear like they were grouped. Then, when I draw the word and image
artwork , I will often think that it is our fault that causes ocean
pollution. I hope that there will be more artwork that spreading this
awareness to the viewers so that people will take action to protect
our environment.
