Digital Photography and Imaging//Project 1B(Adjustment layers and filters)

Lecture(13/9):
Today, Mr Fauzi introduces us adjustment layers and filters.
Adjustment Layers: Non-destructive image editing tools that add color and tonal adjustment to your image without permanently changing its pixels. You can edit and discard your adjustment and restore your original image at any time.
-When you added adjustment layer to your image, a new layer will appear over your image
-Properties panel specific to the type of adjustment you have selected will pop up.
  1. Brightness/ Contrast: make adjustments to the tonal range of your image. Brightness slider is for adjusting the highlights and contrast slider is for adjusting the shadows in your image.

    Figure 1: Brightness/contrast panel
  2. Levels: make adjustment to the levels of shadow , mid tones , and highlights. The most used tool in the adjustment layers.
    Figure 1.1: Levels panel
  3. Curves: the most powerful and precise tool for editing the tones in an image. You can adjust as many point as you want.

    Figure 1.2: Curves panel
  4. Exposure: make adjustment of three sliders, Exposure, Offset and Gamma. Exposure is to adjust only the highlights of the image , Offset is to adjust mid tones and Gamma is to adjust the dark tones only.

  5. Selective Color: selectively modifies the amount of the chosen color without modifying the other colors in the image.

Filters:  Image filtering is changing the appearance of an image by altering the colors of the pixels. Increasing the contrast as well as adding a variety of special effects to images are some of the results of applying filters.

Exercise
Mr Fauzi ask us to use the best composition artwork in week 3 to do some adjustment layers and filters.
My best composition in week 3:

Work progression

Figure 2.1: Before adding levels

Figure 2.2:After adding levels
This is the first adjustment layer that I tried , I can see that after adjustment the image is darker and also the color tones is more matching.

Figure 2.3: After adding curves
Then, I tried the curves too and I feel like after adding curves makes the image look more brighter and the details is more clearer.

Figure 2.4: After adding Hue/Saturation
After that , I tried to make some changes on hue to make it more blue.

Figure 2.5: After changing plants' color
Then, I tried to adjust just the plant and I change the plants to blue and purple color to match with the fish.

Figure 2.5: After changing plants' saturation
Then I tried to change the saturation of the plants darker because I feel like previous one is too sharp and the fish has a bit lose attention. Now it's more matched with the fish.

Figure 2.6 : Changing specific levels of the objects
Then I tried to just adjust the machine's level and It looks brighter and the details is clearer too.

Then , I try to do more adjustment and that is the result.
Figure 2.6: First attempt adjustment layers & filters
Figure 2.6: I try to not changing too much colors of plants but I do changed the color of fish. I brightening the whole image using brightness/contrast.
Figure 2.7: Second attempt adjustment layer & filters
Figure 2.7: I changed the colors of plants and also fish. But in this image I feel like it is a bit dark and also not so saturated.
Figure 2.8: Third attempt adjustment layers & filters
Figure 2.8: This is my third attempt, and I like this one the most because the color of the image is saturated and I like the color of the fish. It is really bright enough to see all the details. The background texture has become more obvious. I also do some changes at the triangle(connecting between machine and the circle). I make it brighter to look like the machine are really playing the film out.
