Illustration and Visual Narrative
Exercises 1 (Vormator And Game
Card Design)
Lectures
week 1 (27/8)- In the first class, Ms Anis and Ms Jennifer gave us a brief about the
modules and the overall timeline. They also explained all the exercises
and also the final project. We will be learning how to create an own
character, comics and also motion comics.
Week 2(3/9): In this class, Ms Jennifer teaches us how to use Adobe
Illustrator to draw our vormator character. She also show us the
layout of the software. It seems to be easy but it is actually
very hard...After that Ms Anis check our sketching and gave some
opinion to it. And after that Ms Anis started the lecture class
and she introduced us the importance of character design and how
to make the character become unique.

1. Shapes
Shapes is what set the iconic look so it's very important to a
character.
Figure 2.1: Examples of shapes in Aladdin
2. Colour
Different choices of colours gave an different impression on a
character.
It is important to make your character become outstanding and
also memorable so that people after seeing it will not forget
it.
Every component(shapes , lines , colours , motifs , patterns)
you put in must work together like they compliment each
others. A balance of visual elements that has a Visual Heirachy
5.Expression/Poses
The viewer will remember the character by its behavior , quirks,
personalities that are visually shown.
Week 3(10/9):In this class , Ms Jennifer teaches us how to unite the
shapes , how to make color gradient and also how to make a
game card design. She also show us how to use a tool called
'knife' in Adobe illustrator. Then, Ms Anis and Ms Jennifer
checked our vormator character and gave us some suggestions.
After that, Ms Anis start the lecture and today's topic is
about composition studies.

-
Establishing: a very wide shot used at the start of a
sequence. It’s used to
introduce the context in which the action takes place
-
Bird's eye view (shot from top) : offers a perspective
similar to that which birds see while flying
-
Framing: captures the subject within a wide view of
their surroundings. This type of camera shot is commonly
used to set the scene. It gives viewers a sense of
perspective as they can see how the subject relates to
their environment.
-
Medium shot: used to reveal more details on the
subject, capturing them from the waist up
-
Close-up: frames the subject’s face in order to focus
on their emotions
-
Worm's eye view (shot from bottom): commonly used to
capture tall elements in the scene
Figure3.3: Lecture Slides: Positive vs Negative
spaces
Positive & Negative Spaces
Positive space is your subject. This can be a person, a
car, a tree, or a house. Negative space is everything in
the frame that's not the subject of your focus. Negative
space gives the eyes a place to rest. Negative space can
be many things such as blank walls, open landscapes, or
out of focus trees.

Week 4(17/9):
In this class, Ms Anis first begin with lecture , today she teaches
us about perspectives. Then, they gave us some reviews on our game
card design. After that Ms Jennifer continued teaches us to use
Adobe Illustrator. She make a background for the vormator character
and She also teaches us how to make some gradient element such as
sun and clouds. She also teaches us how to use clipping mask when we
do this exercise.

INTRODUCES
Task 1 : Vormator Character
Ms Anis introduce us the vormator challenge and ask us to sketch
out a vormator by next week. There are 8 different shapes given to
create a character and we can not stretch the shapes.
With those shapes I started to draw using tablet.
Figure 1.1: Digital Sketching (without colour), 1/9/21
Figure 1.2:Digital sketching(coloured),1/9/21
Honestly, I am not satisfied with my sketch, so I decided to draw
it directly on Adobe Illustrator, after many times of changing ,
at the end it come out three different vormator character.

Figure 3: Cambee
So this is the first vormator that I create using adobe
illustrator and I named it 'Cambee' because it let me think of the
bees and the head looks like a flower.
Figure 3.1: Ragen
And this is the second vormator that I create and I named it
'Ragen' because it looks like a little dragon with an fire
tails.
Figure 3.2: Mashi
This is the third vormator that I create and I named it 'Mashi'
because the inspiration is from mushroom with a cute head and it
also has a fire tail.
Final Vormator Character Outcome
In the conclusion , I decided to choose Ragen as my vormator
character

Task 2: Game Card Design

Work Progress
I made a story for Ragen , It is a character with 'fire' power
and It lives in desert. When it met enemies it will attack them
using its tail with fire. Besides, it will also change the skin
colors to protect itself.
Figure 5.2: Sketching the fire element
Figure5.3: Version 1 done by Adobe illustrator , 18/9
I am quite not satisfied with the outcome so I decided to redo
it.
Figure 5.4: Version 2 done by Adobe illustrator, 21/9
Figure 5.5: Comparison between version 1(left)&2(right)
I think version 2 is much better because it is way more
smoother.
Figure 5.6: Progression of making the background ,
21/9
I started to make a background for Ragen and I try to make
something like desert. I am also using the technique that taught by
Ms Jennifer to make a gradient sun. I also tried to use masking to
make the ground look like sand.

FEEDBACK
Week 3
Specific Feedback : Ms Anis and Ms Jennifer said that I must have
an answer that why am I choosing this character and also why do I
like this character.
REFLECTION
I have learned a lot in this exercise because I don't know how to use
Adobe Illustrator at first. Ms Jennifer taught us various types of tools
that we can use in Adobe Illustrator and It really helped me a lot as a
beginner. I think that this exercise is quite fun and at the same time
it is also quite hard. I can see my classmate's works during the class
and I feel that I have so much to improve. I will also listen to Ms
Anis's suggestion that we should really observed what we see in the real
life to train our 'designer's eyes'.
With those shapes I started to draw using tablet.
