LECTURE
A designer's role: Solve problem with effective visual
communication
'Problems': From personal goals to community events , from corporate functions
to world changing projects (through creative, visual communication )
The Importance of Observation - be attentive to your surroundings, look
at the details and be analytical about them
Observation:
- Effective way to get ideas
- Sources can be from artifacts, daily happenings, physical surroundings and more.
- An active act of acquiring information through the senses of a subject matter its natural setting
- Enables designers to see 'problems' and getting ideas to solve the problems
Sense: important for us to know, feel, understand, analyses and plan our
action

INSTRUCTIONS
In this project, we have to observe our surroundings and we can take
photograph or sketch it out. Then, we have to transform it to an artwork and
also express that why is it so unique to us.

2. Sketches
When I saw this project, I suddenly have an idea that I can draw out memorable
place at my hometown. My hometown is in Chenderiang , Perak. Due to this
pandemic, I have never went back for more than a years. I really miss there a
lot because before the pandemic my family will go back very often to visit my
grandparents and because of the hot weather, we always go to the waterfall
nearby our house. The waterfall is called 'Lata Kinjang' The water are so cold and It is so relaxed and fun when we
go there.

Then, I tried to sketch out the waterfall based on the picture taken.

This is the progress after I added some shadow and also light source to the
picture. I feel like the rock is not so solid and very flat so I need to work on
adding some edges and texture to it.

Feedback: Ms Jinchi said I can proceed with this idea. She also ask me to apply
the knowledge I have learnt of design principles in this design. She also
suggest me to explore with some variations.

In this second attempt, I darken the shadow a bit so that the rock is more
three-dimensional. Then, I also draw a few pair of shoes to show that there were
people playing around the waterfall. I also added some sunlight to enhance the
whole artwork.

The place I drew is called 'Lata Kinjang' and it is a waterfall in my hometown Chenderiang , Perak. I really miss my hometown a lot because I have not gone back for more than a year due to the pandemic . To me, this waterfall has a lot of good memories because we will always go there when we go back to our hometown. And I also drew a few pairs of shoes beside the waterfall to indicate that people like to come here and play around. It was very fun and cold when we played around there. Nowadays there is not much chance to let us put down our phones and get close to nature. Some natural places had already been destroyed by humans so I tried to draw this down so that at least we will be remembering it.
REFLECTIONS
I think this project let me think of the places that I have been in my life and makes me think a lot about it. I found that we really been to many places in our life. There are houses, schools, and also countries. But not much places could let us feel special. I have learnt that we should observe the places when we are there so that we can improve our creativity.
