Design Principles
Final Project//Visual Analysis

LECTURES
Visual Analysis
  • A method of understanding design that focuses on the visual element and principles
  • A description and explanation of visual structure for its own sake
  • Recognize the choices that designers made in creating the design
  • Understand how the formal properties of a design communicate ideas, content or meaning
  • A critical part of visual literacy, a skill that helps people read and critically interpret images
  • Sharpens critical judgement skills and helps people seek out answer instead of passively receiving information
Visual Analysis included three steps:
Observation, Analysis, Interpretation

Phrase 1: Observation
  • Closely looking at and identifying the visual element of a design
  • Try to describe them carefully and accurately in your own words
  • Do not read beforehand about the design at all
  • Looking, thinking, finding good languages to communicate what you notice
Phrase 2: Analysis
  • Think about your observations and try to make statements about the artwork based on the evidence of your observations(phrase 1)
  • Combine together to create a whole and what effects that whole has on the viewer
  • Apply Design Principles knowledge that we have learnt throughout these few weeks
Phrase 3: Interpretation
  • Observations, description and analysis of the work are fused with facts about the design work and historical context that you find in trustworthy sources
  • The meaning of the design and the purpose for it to be created

Visual Analysis

Figure 2: 'Sky Poster Design Series' by Zeka Design

Phrase 1 Observations:
'Sky Poster Design Series' is a photo collage done by Yaroslav Iakovlev. It is a portrait format poster. The colors in this poster is purple, pink, beige and grey color. Purple and pink colors are the brighter color in the poster. The model is placing at the center place .The tittle in the poster is outline only and in white color so it is sharper when it placed behind purple and pink background. There are some words that place at four edges of the poster. Behind of the woman is some flowers in black and white color. There are some element in this poster which is circles, lines and also dots. These elements can be found beside the woman.

Phrase 2 Analysis:
The woman in the center is the emphasis of the whole poster. The uses of superimposed color make contrast to the poster. Not only that, the color between foreground(pink and purple) and background(white) create a strong contrast too. The rectangular shapes are composed in diagonal and this creates movement to the poster. The small element like dots and cross around the woman enriched the poster. Good use of space make the whole poster has visual hierarchy and create a sense of unity when all the elements put together. Not only that, the use of color also create a sense of harmony. The phrase 'Feel It' in this poster placed at the center make it contrast and viewers can easily seeing it when they look at this poster. The words that placing at four edges also create a movement because the viewers will be looking it in a circular.

Phrase 3 Interpretation :
The 'Sky Poster Design Series' is design by Yaroslav Iakovlev who also create 'Zeka Design'.
According to him(Link), the main concept of this series is to represent freedom the sky as the main element in the whole poster. Among the main figure of the design layout and creative geometric shapes all the element comes to one to transmit the freedom feeling.

Yaroslav Iakovlev is a graphic and brand designer based in Valencia, Spain. He started working in 2015 and start developing the poster design collections in 2018 to master his own design technique and skills. (Link)

The creative poster design are using photoshop and some design element. It is minimalist poster design using digital collage and graphic elements. I think this poster is simple and nice because it brings out the meaning of freedom and not too complicated. This poster caught my attention because it gave me a sense of aesthetic and I think that this designer has his own style.

Description: I chose Taylor Swift as the model for this poster because She is my idol. The reason I chose this color scheme is because she has an album called 'RED' and I really like this album. Then, I arrange three stripes from top left and also right middle to create some movements. I place a circle with a pink liquid texture behind the model to emphasize it. I also placed the snakes on the diagonal which is on top right and bottom left. This snake logo represents one of the albums called 'Reputation'. I like her attitude of revenge on people who insult her with this album. And the last part, I added her name in the poster.

REFLECTIONS
I would say this task is harder than all the previous tasks because we have to analyze others' artwork and learn something from it and transform or place it to our own artwork. But it is a good experience to learn how to analyze the artwork from the outside and to understand what concept or meaning behind that the designer tried to bring out.
