LECTURES

Week 7 (8/10/21): Today, Ms Anis introduced us 3 Acts Structure which is a technique that we should use when we setup a story. Then, Ms Anis and Ms Jennifer started to consult with us and gave us some opinion on our work. After that, Ms Jennifer start to teach us how to use timeline in Adobe Photoshop to animate our poster.

Central Theme: It’s the main idea or underlying meaning. It’s the storyteller’s personal opinion on the subject matter. Have both a major theme and minor themes
Major theme: An idea that is intertwined and repeated throughout the whole narrative
Minor theme: An idea that appears more subtly, and doesn’t necessarily repeat

Conflict: It’s what creates tension and builds suspense, which are the elements that make a story interesting.

Characters: A story usually includes a number of characters, each with a different role or purpose, There is almost always a protagonist and antagonist.

Protagonist(good): the main character of a story. He or she has a clear goal to accomplish or a conflict to overcome.

Antagonist(bad): Antagonists oppose protagonists, standing between them and their ultimate goals

3 Acts-Structure
1. Setup:  The world in which the protagonist exists prior to the journey. The setup usually ends with the conflict being revealed
2. Rising Tension: The series of obstacles the protagonist must overcome. Each obstacle is usually more difficult and with higher stakes than the previous one
3. Conflict: The point of highest tension, and the major decisive turning point for the protagonist
Resolution(ending): The conflict’s conclusion. This is where the protagonist finally overcomes the conflict, learns to accept it, or is ultimately defeated by it. Regardless, this is where the journey ends.

Week 8(15/10/21): This week is independent learning week so there will be no class today.

Week 9(22/10/21):  This week, Ms Anis introduced us about Transitions in making comics.
Different Kinds of Panel to Panel transitions
1. Moment to moment:  it can be used to slow down and draw out action, but be aware, if over utilized it can make your comics dull and laborious to draw and read.
2. Action to action: typically focuses on significant events or movement from panel to panel, and over larger intervals of time between moments
3. Scene to scene: happen in one location, and continuous period of time.
4. Aspect to aspect: an interesting way to jump around a scene, taking in key details or letting the characters focus wonder
5.Symbolic: deal with the unreal, the felt, and the imagined. Moving the readers from an imagined or recalled space to either another, or a real one
6. Rolling Transition: This form of transition from one ‘panel’ or idea to the next.
7. Non Sequitur: These are not common at all, outside of surreal abstract or gag comics. perceive a narrative between juxtaposed moments or things

But note that these are not rules!

3 Acts Structure(Before Review)

Act 1

Once upon a time, there were two boys living in a town. One called Billy and another
called Adam. Billy likes to bully Adam. He always threw rubbish on Adam and called him some bad nicknames. Adam is very timid and he doesn't dare to tell the teacher or his family. The town has a strange house and it is very desolate and nobody is living in it.

Act 2
One day, Billy saw a girl go to the strange house early in the morning, he felt curious and wanted to explore the house. Then, he forced Adam to go with him during the night. When they reach in front of the house, Billy pushes Adam to go in the house first, Adam goes in and he is too scared and he uses the torchlight to see around the house. He saw a girl who looked like a doll standing in front of him. She is standing there with a wicked smile. Suddenly she starts to talk to Adam and asks him to do a trade with him. If Adam dares to give a bag of candy to Billy, then Adam could be safe and survive and he may leave the house.

Act 3
Finally, Adam tells Billy there is nothing in the house and gives him the candy. Billy didn't know anything and ate the candy happily. After that , Billy can't move and he tries to hold on to Adam but he was forcibly taken away by the girl. Billy keeps on struggling and begging Adam to save him. Adam just opened the door and went out. Adam leaves with a very cynical and wicked smile like the doll. Adam was happy that he had finally gotten rid of Billy. Few months later, Adam passed by the strange house, everything seemed to be normal but he didn’t notice that there was a pair of eyes staring at him from the window of the strange house.

Then, he sees a girl crawling out from a hole on the wall and standing in front of him. Suddenly, she shows a wicked smile. Adam is scared and screaming. The girl starts to talk to Adam and asks him to do a trade with him. If Adam dares to give a bag of candy to his friend, then Adam could be safe and survive and he may leave.

Act 3-
Finally, Adam tells Billy to meet at the alley. They meet there and Adam gives Billy the bag of candy. Billy didn't know anything and ate the candy happily. Digitalized
Before I start, I draw the main background of the whole story first which is the horror alley because most of the scenes will use it.

 Motion Comic
For the motion part, I create a AI file with HDV720 1280x720 px and put my panel one by one on each layers and named it. This method is taught by Ms Jennifer and I think that is much easier to animate when we import it to After Effects. I separated the parts that I want to animate into another layer so that it can move it individually.

Then after I animated the file one by one, I create a new composition and put it all into it and that is how the final video look like.

And when I done with the animation part, I started to find some sound effects that suits my video. I couldn't find a suitable background music to put in my video so I decided to just put sound effects.

REFLECTIONS

This is the hardest project for me because I rarely watch comics and it took me many hours to finish it. Other than that, I am also scared of watching horror movies or creatures so it is a big challenge for me to overcome my fear. But I got a great sense of accomplishment when seeing the outcome. I still couldn't believe I drew out a short comic. Although it's tough, I learnt a lot in this project. I learnt how to develop transitions of the comic and also how to make use of the limited panel given to put essential parts.
