LECTURES

The mixing of sound elements creates an audio setting that supports the action and engages the spectators.
  1. Speech-dialog, voice over
  2. Sound effects- ambiences(background)
  3. Music- enhance the dramatic narrative and emotional impact in movie
Dubbing:
  • Automated Dialog Replacement (ADR)
  • The process of re-recording dialogue after the filming process
  • Improve audio quality or reflect dialogue changes

Foley: A sound effects technique for synchronous effects or live effects.

Frequency Range:
Hertz: Human hearing: frequency range from 20Hz to 20,000 Hz

Figure 1.1: 7subset of frequencies used to help define the ranges

Decibels(dB): The threshold of human hearing is measured as 0dB SPL (sound pressure level) and the threshold of pain 130dB SPL

Mono vs Stereo

Mono: recorded using single audio channel
Stereo: recorded using two audio channel

Phone call sound effects
Bring down bass, TREBLE, raise mid range between 500 Hz to 2k Hz

Muffled Sound Effects
Usually by wrapping it with something. Example: speak with a scarf over you mouth
Bass remain, TREBLE to the bottom, raise mid range to top

Reverb Sound Effect
Sound In space, echo cause by the reflection of sound waves from the surface
Apply reverb

Audio Design

4 Important Sound Design Techniques:
  • Time stretching/ compression
  • Pitch Shifting
  • Reversing
  • Layering
Time stretching/ compression: change the length of audio without altering its pinch
Pitch Shifting : adjusting the pitch of an audio signal upwards or downwards, for both corrective (Exp: getting a vocal perfectly in tune) / purely creative (Exp: changing the character of a drum)
Reversing: the end of the audio will be heard first and the beginning last, changes the whole feeling and rhythm of the sound
Layering: arranging several separate sounds together in such a way the overall effect is of a single complete sound

EXERCISES

1. Audio Dubbing

Task: Mr. Martin gave a video without audio and a script in a Drive folder. Then, we have to record our own voice-over to dub the talking part of the video. He gave us a clips from movie "Soul" 2020. Other than that, we have to also find some sound effects from the internet and put it into the video clips.

2. Audio Shaping

Task: this week, based on what we learned from the lecture slide, Mr Martin gave us  audio files and with a tutorial video, we had to use the files given to make sound shaping. We are given 5 different scenes and based on the scene, we had to create the accurate sound that suits the certain environment.

Final Outcome of Audio Shaping Exercise 2

1. Voice from Phone call

2. Voice coming from inside the closet

3. Big Stadium

4. Bathroom

5.Underground cave

3. Sound Design Exercise 3
Task: Using the audio given, magnification explosion sound, creating different variations of punch sounds and also create a monster alien sound effects.

FEEDBACK

Week 7: Mr Martin said that audio dubbing video ambience sound is not enough, he asked me to find some car passing by sound effects.

REFLECTIONS

In conclusion, I learned many knowledges of how to use Adobe Audition to create or design audio. I observed that they are so many fun effects to learn to use a single audio to create many different variants of audios. I found that pitch shifting was so fun because it gets to make many version of audio and it changes the original pitch to either higher or lower. I think these exercises were useful for my further studies.
