TASK 3: Type Design And Communication
Task:
OPTION 1: Develop a font that is intended to solve a larger problem
or meant to be part of a solution in the area of our interest be it
graphic design, animation, new media or entertainment design or any other
related area not necessarily reflecting our specialization.
or
OPTION 2: Explore the use of typeface in our area of interest, understand
its existing relationship, identify areas that could be improved upon,
explore possible solutions or combinations that may add value to the
existing typeface.

First attempt on Poster design

Red Carpet Backdrop
Sketches
My ideas is to make an futuristic feel typeface and I try to keep every
letters are slanted in same angles.

Digitization
I created an 110px strokes and use them in every letters to make sure they
are all same. I also created guidelines to keep my letters were all same
size and width.

First Attempt
Week 11: This is my first attempt on digitizing typefaces in AI.
Figure 1.4: first attempt on task 3 type design, week 11
Refinement
Based on the feedback, I created a red lines and check every letters again
to make sure they were all slanted in a same angle. This can also keep all
letters were consistent. Then, I also changed the some rounded letters for
example B D P R. I use the same stroke as other letters to make the
rounded part of these letters and I think that is better than previous
attempt.

2nd Attempt
Week 12:
This is my second attempt on digitizing typefaces in AI. I make many
changes based on Mr. Vinod's feedback.
Figure 1.9: 2nd attempt on task 3 type design, week 12
Refinement
Based on the feedback given, I check for every letter's width and
including the numbers to make sure they all are in a same width. Then, for
this week, I also developing lowercase letter as Mr. Vinod said.

Generate Font
After successful digitizing all letters, numbers and punctuations in Ai, I
exported the files as SVG and imported it into Font Forge to generate the
typeface.

Then, I started to work on kerning these letters.

Poster
After done generating the font, I started to work on application part. My
idea was applying my typeface into existing movie poster. I will choose
futuristic movie as my typefaces was designed to be futuristic too. At the
end, I choose the movie called 'Arrival' because it suits the futuristic
theme and also I found that the typeface of original movie poster were not
applied very well. I tend to design a new poster than use back the
original poster. Then, I went to watch the movie and I found that the
circle thingy were important elements throughout the whole movie so I
wanted to add it in my poster.

Refinement
Based on the feedback given, I tried to use the original poster and remove
the original title and add title with my designed typeface. I think that
is way too simple as there is no much that I can do in original poster so
I decided to design a new poster for the movie.

Then, I tried to find out the typeface that have been used in the original
poster because I want to use back the same typeface. I search on internet
and end up I found the typeface called 'Neutraface Condensed' were look
alike to the original one so I use it in my poster design.

Collateral
Then, I was thinking about what merchandise items could be create to sell
after the movie. I decided to make T-shirt, Phone cases, and also red
carpet backdrop.

Refinement
Besides refining the collateral, I also added another collateral product
which is popcorn packaging.

FEEDBACK
Week 10:
Specific Feedback: Mr. Vinod ask me to find a sci-fi poster that
with a bad typeface design and try to redesign it and I can proceed with
this idea.
Week 11:
General Feedback: We should all start thinking about the
application of the typeface.
Specific Feedback: There are many minor thing that should be take
care of. For examples, the slanted stokes, curves and also the space. Make
sure the letters were consistent and some punctuation should be bigger and
same height with letters.
Week 12
General Feedback: we have to quickly did our application
(collateral) as we left not much time.
Specific Feedback: Mr. Vinod said that my alphabets 5,6 were a bit
not same width with 9 and overall is consistent and he also asked me to
develop the lowercase alphabets too. He suggest me to focus on one movie
and I can do some collateral that relate to the movie.
Week 13
General Feedback: Mr. Vinod ask us to make sure we finish all tasks
and also final compilation by next Friday. He also asked people who
redesigned the existing poster should use back the original typeface for
certain part and title using our designed typeface.
Specific Feedback: Mr. Vinod said that the poster doesn't stand out
well and I shall use back the original existing typeface to the details
part (other information). Kerning for the poster title have to be refined.
REFLECTIONS
Experiences
I think this task is overall the hardest because it not just require us
to keep every letters consistent but also need to think about the
further use of the typeface. But developing all, I feel a great sense of
accomplishment when seeing the outcome.
Observations
I observed that keep all the letters consistent was a tough process
as we have to check and observed every letters again and again. It was
a very time-consuming part. Then, after digitized the font and
imported into Font Forge, the challenge was doing the kerning and
tracking as we had to try out the letters and see whether it works
well or not. I observed that besides developing the typeface, their
application is also important because there will be no value if we
didn't apply it well.
Findings
I found that even the minor different of stroke will also affect
their consistency. I found that it was a tough process on developing
the typeface because it takes a lot of efforts and time.

The Importance and examples of typography used in a movie-
Link
Typography is often overlooked when discussing design especially for
something as visual as a film poster. But although there are usually few
words on a poster, how these words are displayed can have a significant
impact on the reader
1. Adds emotion, drama and personality to a poster
2. Make the film more memorable and watchable
Larger font sizes can have the ability to lead a
stronger emotional connections
Effective examples of typography used in recent years movie poster:
- Bold and blocky: used with sans serif fonts, thick lettering is strong and impactful. It makes the film have a sense of directness and no-nonsense.
- Thin and sophisticated: looks much more delicate and refined, suggested to be use in a more intellectual film.
- Script and flow: much more fanciful and decorative, suggested to be used in a traditional or romantical world.
- Slide into the action: action movies usually use text that set on the diagonal to create the momentum and dynamism of the narrative. The text create a sense of movement can indicates action and adventure of the movies.
- Free and easy: most poster utilize text on a straight lines. Curved/ twisted the text to let viewer know they will be in for an unique and mystery ride.
- Treatment: customize the typography with some additional visual elements
- Word and image: blur the line between the text and the image. It connect the title and image because it catches viewer's attention. This style works best for short titles only.
The selection of styles conveys the skill and artistry that goes into a
good poster typography.
